Aran Islands

Great shoot on the Aran Islands last week, I would recommend any of the islands for a visit.

For our intrepid international travelers, there are a group of islands of the west coast of County Clare, Ireland called the Aran Islands. Easily accessible from Galway via ferry or regular flights. It is quite rugged and the islanders still communicate in their native Irish tongue.

We stayed at the Aran Islands Hotel, great fun, not for the light hearted.

Irving Penn coming to the National Portrait Gallery

PORTRAITS

I was trying to buy his recent book Irving Penn: Small Trades over the holidays but it seems to be sold out already. I will pop in to see the show this Spring. There is already a great buzz about it. There is a £10 ticket price. If you would like a cheaper option you can pop in free of charge to the NPG before Valentines day to see the Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize Exhibit. I believe it was won this year by Paul Floyd Blake.

100 Portraits by Nick Knight with i-D Magazine

Somerset House,  1-20 December – Strand London WC2R 1LA – Tel: +44 (0)20 7845 4600

This should be very interesting, apparently Mr. Nick Knight in association with the venerable i_D Magazine is holding court at Somerset House in London for most of December. He will be shooting there live and as it is the uber cool fashion exhibition space at the moment tickets are on sale so the average Joe can watch the action. Sounds like an interesting afternoon out in WC2.

TO BOOK Live Studio

I believe there is also a book published in conjunction with the event, the event I believe is part of the ongoing work that Knight’s SHOWstudio website has generated. The site has been a canvas for him and is developing into quite a popular stop for fashion and visiual art. The show and all the guest portraits can also be followed on the SHOWStudio blog.

Thank you all kindly.

Norman Parkinson: A Very British Glamour

Somerset House

Until 31 January 2010
Terrace Rooms, free admission

An exhibition to celebrate the publication of Norman Parkinson: A Very British Glamour

One of the great pioneers of fashion photography, and a decisive influence on subsequent generations of fashion photographers, Norman Parkinson is famous for redefining glamour in fashion as something far more spontaneous and modern than it had ever been before him.

Another excuse to visit London and buy another coffee table book, a portrait of his long career from the 1930s through the 1980s, Louise Baring’s Norman Parkinson: A Very British Glamour is being published by Rizzoli in October 2009. Link

Twiggy: A Life in Photographs

Twiggy: A life in photographs in September

There are some interesting photography shows upcoming at the National Portrait Gallery, one such exhibition is celebrating Twiggy’s successful career to date.

To accompany the display, the National Portrait Gallery has published a hard-back book Twiggy: A Life in Photographs in September. Early vibes are that the book is great. You can buy it from the npg website.

The show runs in Room 33 from the 19 September 2009 – 21 March 2010
