A very cool ‘How to’ video for Nikon.

Nikon just released two professonal cameras. The D4 and the D800, both are both full frame dslr cameras and huge leaps forward in technology. The D800 has a very large sensor so I believe it is probably better in the fashion studio. The D4 is another beast altogether and is built like a tank and certainly Nikon’s new flagship. The D4 is equipped with a new Nikon FX-format CMOS image sensor. A dedicated movie-record button has been positioned near the shutter-release button for smooth starting and stopping of movie recording with a feel similar to that of still-image shooting.

Anyway enough of the technical stuff, if you want to see how to shoot amazing video with a nikon, have a look………

This story is not for everyone, it is for all the Art and Creative Directors who ever dabled with the infamous flashing gifs of web design. For several years GIFs fell out of fashion as they were a very simplistic technology. However, as this short and interesting look at GIFs illustrates the evolving and ‘cooler than before’ medium is enjoying a comeback in the web and art world. The success of Tumblr is also leading the way as it is a becoming a hotbed for creative innovation. Have a look and be surprised, the Gif has grown up.

TIME names it’s ten most interesting fashion videos in recent years. They are worth a look, it is notable that a short film can illustrate fashion with a dimension that just can’t be elaborated in print and editorial. That is of course if it is produced with some thought. There are an abundance of very tasteless and artless efforts in the wider domain these days, so much in fact I often shiver at the thought of viewing the latest offerings. Initially, on seeing Harmony Korine’s short film “Act da Fool” featuring Proenza Shouler’s 2011 Spring Collection, I thought, okay this is Art gone astray. However, the reality of everyday teen life in some suburbs of american society is represented here in a very honest and raw fashion. This short film is shot in a low income neighborhood of Nashville, fashion always has a licence to add more polish or imagination, this offering is more honest with a healthy portion of reality.

I take my hat off to TIME editors, many would tip toe around this short film.

A beautiful short film hosted on nowness.com by filmmakers Jamie Delaney and Keith Nally. The film was made in collaboration with heritage enthusiast and Acne Paper Editor Charlotte Rey. Molloys is one of the last remaining weavers of tweed in western Ireland. Their location is the windswept and barren hills of Donegal on the northwest corner of the island. The short captures the incredible textures and colour of the Irish landscape and it’s correlation to the textured tweed.

Someone asked me once ……what is art? The answer I gave “Art is something you appreciate over time, indeed, every time you encounter a particular work it has blossomed in your consciousness even more, it has become more beautiful than before.” Of course my friend believed I was talking about oil paintings, many people relate the art world to our national galleries and the pieces that hang from their esteemed walls. I went on to explain that art is all around them and they appreciate it as much as anyone, it can be your garden and how it has developed over the years. It could be the slick lines on your car you admire each morning, it might be the extension on your neighbor’s house.

I believe my explanation to be rather good, however I think Mr. Chow brings it to another level. Have a look at this narrative on food and the search for perfection. A short film by Alison Chernick hosted by the creative folks at nowness.com.

As a fashion photographer a conversation I have regularly with young women is ‘how to be a model’ ? Those aspiring models email or call me and I repeat the same information over and over again on the modeling industry and modeling agencies.

Honestly there is no easy answer on how to be a model. It depends often where you live, and if you fit the ‘criteria’ necessary to be accepted by a modeling agency.

As a short guide I have outlined the basic starting points below.

How do I go about getting into a modeling agency and the fashion industry?

Firstly, research legitimate established agencies in your area.

Have a look at their websites and see what type of girls or guys they have at the modeling agency.

Local agencies tend to do a lot of fashion shows and not much photography work.

The bigger agencies in large cities serve fashion shows, photography, advertising and television.

It does not cost money to join an agency.

Most model agency websites will have a page that includes instructions on how to submit your photos and details.

Note the specifications they require, height, age, etc. etc.

Read the information carefully and follow these instructions exactly.

Remember, this is your initial encounter with the agency and first impressions are very important in this industry.

If you are going to submit shots find someone who is handy with a camera.

There is no need to get professional shots at this stage.

The agency will want to see what you look like in these photos so…..

Do not wear makeup and brush your hair to the front so your hair length can be seen.

Wear fitted clothing, not baggy or multiple layers.

Take a very clean head shot, three quarter length shot, and full length shot of you.

Don’t use the camera flash, take them outdoors in the shade and make sure they are properly exposed.

Send the shots to the agency with the relevant information the agency outlined on their information page, e.g. age, height, contact details.

Good luck. Do not be dismayed if you don’t hear back. Some agencies receive hundreds of pictures each day.
